Conflicts between family and school

The collaboration between the school and parents is important for children’s development and learning. Working together asks all parties involved to be respectful and tolerant towards each other as well as willing to contribute to long-term solutions. Parents’ expectations and teachers’ perceptions might differ. Parents might have a tendency to see their child as central while the teacher has to focus on the child as part of a bigger group.

Family life changes when a child starts kindergarten. Tasks and roles have to be redefined which is not always easy. For children it is important to sense that the teachers collaborate with the parents and that there is mutual respect even when they don’t agree completely.

Exchanging with your children’s teacher can be very helpful if you have questions or worries. If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your conversation with your child’s teacher you can always talk to the school’s principal, the school’s social workers or the school board. They can act as mediators.

Fairness is very important. Teachers are compelled to inform the school if there have been conflicts with parents. The school is obligated to make sure that the concerned student does not experience any disadvantages from the teacher. It is always better to find a mutual agreement instead of opposing the teacher’s solution.
